7:50- Left Hopetown and anchored outside the Harbor to make water. Seeing that it was the first time running the system, it took Steve awhile to get it going.
Steve thinks he blew the valve on the water maker and of course he doesn't have a spare part. We might have to wait until we get to Georgetown to get the part. Not a big deal since we still have a tank of water.
10:30am- Seeing that we couldn't make water, we left the Harbor to go meet with Dr. Jim.
Not sure if the Captain wasn't paying attention, but we ran aground. A good Samaritan in a rented motor boat stopped by to help.
This guy helped us out after running aground |
You can see were we went off our course |
11:30am. Yeah...he managed to pull the boat on a heal and got us free. At the time we were only in 3.5 feet of water when our boat draws 5.6ft. Steve took the corner too short. Not one of our better days so far. It is nice to see there are still good people willing to help others. He didn't even want money.
Now we have to search for Dr. Jim. Steve asked for bottled water afterwards but I think he really wanted a beer.
12:30pm- Went by the Channel Cay lighthouse as we ate our lunch.
1:10pm- We arrived a Linear Cay which is across from Little Harbor and met up with Dr. Jim who was already anchored. There must be at least 20 boats ready to cross the Atlantic tomorrow to Spanish Wells.
4;30pm- Steve and I took the dinghy to explore a private island. We went to Dr. Jim's boat for cocktails. After an hour, we came back to the boat and lifted the dinghy and fastened my kayak for the long journey tomorrow to Spanish Islands.
9:00pm- After watching a movie, we went to bed early.
January 20, 2017 -Crossing the Atlantic
4:00am- Headed out in the dark. Very weird motor sailing in the dark. Steve had a difficult time putting the sail up but once she was up, we followed Dr. Jim's boat "Arial". The lighted headset which Steve received as a Christmas present came in handy when sailing in the dark. We could see the bio phosphoresces lights as the boat sailed thru the waves along with the bright stars. Love it!
7:00am- Watched as the sun rise behind the clouds
As the sun went up, the winds were perfect for sailing. We are now going 7 -8 knots with no motor. Feels so much quieter without the motor.
7:15am- We noticed Arial turning around. They usually have to go in the wind in order to reef their main. When we radioed them, they told us they lost their flag and went back to pick it up but it must of sank. They are now behind us.
11:45am- The seas have calmed and I am able to walk around better. We were going 8.5 knots at times. Steve and I were saying that that was the longest sail that we have done with GaYa without motoring. It's a great sail where Steve gave the autopilot a rest and steered the boat. it was blowing 23 with 5 to 6 ft swells. We feel like we get our workout just trying to keep our balance.
12:20pm- Going by Egg Islands. The water is changing to Turquoise color once again. We plan to stay at Spanish WellsYacht Haven for at least a night.
1:30pm- Arial wanted us to take the lead into the Yacht Club since it can be pretty tricky with depth. Their draft is 6.6ft.
2:30pm- Made it to Spanish Harbor Haven Yacht Club. We covered 63 miles today.
As Ariel approached the dock, they announced they were coming in without a motor. They safely brought her in. Guess one of the wires from their battery was dead. Glad they got that resolved.
Steve and I went for a longggggg shower. It felt so good.
We then walked downtown and bought a loaf of bread at their grocery store.
We then went for happy hour at the restaurant but found out we couldn't eat anything until 6:00pm so we ordered a margarita.
6:00pm We were so hungry that we didn't wait for Jim's crew. We had a wonderful dinner at Wreckers. Jim and his crew showed up shortly and we ended up sitting with them while they ate.
Steve and I went back to the boat to listen to music but ended up in bed by 9:30pm. It has been a long day!
Spanish Wells Yacht Haven is a beautiful marina with very clean facilities with a pool.
