January 22 & 23, 2018 - Cape Eleuthera Marina

January 22, 2018
6:00am-  We didn't need our alarm clocks this morning since rooster everywhere in Alice town Hatchet Bay woke us up.  Nice protected anchorage however we will not be visiting the town since our take off this morning is 8:00am.
8:00- Left Hatchet Bay

9:00am- What a gorgeous day.  Finally, the sun was out and Steve was able to sit on the boat deck while sailing.
We talked on the radio to another boat which was following us which was named "Vela". We told them that it was the name of our previous owned boat.  They were from Texas yall.  It is nice to have AIS system to know the names of the boats sailing around us with AIS.

10:30am- We treated ourselves to apples dipped with peanut butter.  Good healthy snack. We had to start the motor up and take down the head sail since the wind died down.
The water is so clear you can see the rocks

3:00pm- We arrived at Cape Eleuthra  Marina.  We walked over to Dr Jim's boat and noticed he was wearing the hat I made for him.  I was so pleased that it fit him.

When we were back at the boat,  we noticed one of our tanks ran out of water really quickly.  Upon examination, we noticed there was a hole in the water line which was draining our water.
Steve had parts to fix it.
While he filled up the water tanks and plugged in the hydro, I went to do 2 loads of wash and took a showers.
It started pouring and we could see a rainbow in the sky.  At least it didn't last too long. Temperature now is in the mid to high 70's with a constant easterly blowing from 10 to 15 knots. Not looking forward to Friday, Saturday and Sunday which is suppose to blow 25 to 35 knots day and night.
7:00pm- Went out to eat with Dr Jim and his crew John, Susan, Nancy, Jan and Katrina. It was quite different.  The taxi driver, who's husband own the taxi company and the bar across from the restaurant, also works at the marina.  The restaurant owner, Sheryl, also works at the marina.  The restaurant was about a q5 Miles drive.  The restaurant is a large room which was part of their house. Nothing fancy and you had to bring your own drinks.  They served us rice and beans, peas and carrots, conch fritters, grouper fingers, chicken wings, cracked conch and macaroni and cheese.  It was quite good.

We were back at the boat around 8:45pm.

Steve and I sat in back of the boat with a drink and enjoyed recapping our day.

No house  on foundation due to hurricane

6:00am- I couldn't sleep in this morning probably because we go to bed so early.  I decided to go for a walk and explore a bit before Steve woke up.  Cape Eleuthera Marina  is surrounded by beaches so I went and explore the East side beach.  Not much there however I noticed an area which had just a foundation.  I assume the house got torn up due to hurricanes.

Lots of sharks and fish

8:00am- Some of Jim's crew needed money for an ATM Machine and Susan and John were nominated to go on their behalf.  The ATM machine was in downtown Rock Sound which was about 20 miles.  Steve and I figured we would go for the ride in order to get a few provisions.  Provisions was $20, wine $20 and taxi $80.  Actually, it was $180 since Susan and John had to pay the same.  At least Germaine, our taxi driver, gave us a tour and talked about his dad who had 18 kids.

Boats come in with supplies which the locals order
Provisions can be from building material, groceries, liquor and car parts

Locals have goats and chicken on their property

School had their own version of snowmen

We visited the ocean hole at Rock Sound
Steve and John looking at fish
John looking out at the hole

Parts of the beach looks like a conch cemetery

This herring scared me this morning on my way to the shower house.
After we came back from our taxi ride, John and Susan came over for coffee.
Steve and I then went by the pool side and relaxed a bit.  Now this feel like the Bahamas.  We then went for another long walk to the beach.

A day of relaxation by the pool

Steve found a coconut and cracked it open for us to drink coconut milk and eat some of the coconut
Had to go up the mast to fix a light

Steve cracked open a coconut which we found on the property

It was a gorgeous view from the top of the mast

Before dinner, John came to the boat to help us while Steve hoisted me up the mast to fix a light
John stayed for a beer and then Nancy joined us afterwards.
They asked us to go out to dinner with them however Steve and I decided to have a nice steak and salad tonight.

What a great meal.  Afterwards, we watched a movie.
